Application details

Heavy-duty lubricated conveyor chains, up to several kilometres in length, need periodic cleaning to remove dust and dirt. Because of their size and weight they are cleaned on site by means of sprays. Hot (70ºC) recycled cleaning liquid is delivered to the nozzles at high pressure from purpose designed mobile units with integral reservoir tank and pump system. The liquid is fed back into tank through 30-micron filters. Hydra-Cell G12 pumps have been chosen for this work - preferred over alternatives because of their pressure capability, tolerance of solid particles and easy maintenance. The pump is designed for vertical mounting and sits directly on top of the tank, minimising pipework.

Some years ago this manufacturer of turbo-chargers, mainly for the automobile industry decided to equip its OKUMA machines with a high-pressure coolant facility. Coolant was previously fed to the machines frow a low-pressure central filtration system. OKUMA recommended Mayfran HP filtration units that included Hydra-Cell as the HP pump.

The Mayfran HP unit 'stands alone' next to each machine, metal particles are filtered out of the coolant (down to 50 microns), by means of a drum filter. There are 11 Hydra-Cell pumps in total.

Since then the customer has benefited from HP coolant, in particular:

  • faster cutting speeds
  • continuous lubrication of the cutting tool - extending tool life
  • consistent, predictable workpiece quality
  • fewer rejects and less downtime

He now enjoys predictable production rates and knows his workpiece costs.

In 2008 one of the Hydra-Cell's was opened for a maintenance/training check. The original valves and diaphragms were found to still be working after 22,000 hours of operation! The Hydra-Cell's reliability and proven low maintenance are essential pump requirements at this 24/7 continuous production site.

Application details

As part of major additions to its production facilities in India, a leading Japanese vehicle manufacturer planned a new production line for diesel engine components. Machine tools originally brought in from Japan, or purchased in India for this expansion, incorporated high pressure coolant delivery systems equipped with piston pumps.

Meanwhile the company looked out for alternative pumps that could run reliably for long periods on virtually continuous 24 hour duty. Screw pumps from a German manufacturer and centrifugal pumps from another well-known European supplier were among the options considered.

Discussions with Machinomatic Engineers, Wanner’s distributor in India on the advantages of Hydra-Cell’s seal-less design alerted plant engineering to two features of particular interest to the company: low maintenance and sustainably low power consumption.

Initially replacing two piston pumps and establishing that their seal-less replacements performed to expectations, the company bought more All new machine tool coolant systems are now fitted with Hydra-Cell pumps, while more of the pumps are running in other applications such as auto parts wash.

More than thirty Hydra-Cell pumps (models G10, G25 and the vertically mounted G12) were said (May 2014) to be working on machine tool coolant systems.
