Applications

Metering & dosing first stage processes & waste treatment

In metering and dosing applications, from initial process stages to water treatment plants, the WANNER Hydra-Cell pump has a number of advantages over traditional metering pumps. Its compact design is immediately obvious, saving installation space and contributing directly to other benefits. They include: savings in acquisition costs, reduced energy consumption and lower maintenance costs – adding up to Life Cycle Costs which on independent investigation came out ‘best in class’.  Moreover, flow is virtually pulseless, reducing or eliminating any requirement for pulsation dampeners.

Hydra-Cell pumps are available with tri-clamp hygienic connections and polished internal components to 0.4 Ra.

Seal-less design (the pump has no dynamic seals in contact with the process liquid) means that non-lubricating solvents and liquids containing suspended particles can be pumped reliably at pressure in HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and ultra-high pressure reverse osmosis systems.

Pilot plants used in process development and production installations for handling the waste stream are typical applications.

Tank and tote wash-down for pharmaceuticals

On containers of any size, from big tanks to totes, drums, mixer vessels and tanker trucks, Hydra-Cell’s seal-less technology allows the handling of the contaminated, recycled fluids that can ruin packed or sealed pumps. Moreover the pumps are available in a wide choice of materials compatible with some of the harshest cleaning agents in use, including caustics and MEK, and can deliver these solutions at the pressures that successful high-impact cleaning often requires.

Application details

A market-leading speciality chemicals company manufactures intermediate Active Pharamceutical Ingredient (API) which is highly hazardous and corrosive in nature.

Previously they used Lewa pumps for a batch type reactor handling these liquids and maintaining the liquid at the desired temperature would require utility management and safety protocols. Now they have shifted the process to Continuous Flow Reactors.

Hydra-Cell pumps are used in the pilot scale set-up which has been running suceesfully since January 2020 without any maintanence or safety issues.

Now they are planning to scale-up the process to the commercial production using higher capacity of Hydra-Cell pumps.

Advantages of Hydra-Cell pump on this application
  • Ability to reliably pump corrosive liquids
  • Extremely low pulse flow
  • Minimal service and maintenance

This Hungarian plant is engaged in R&D and manufacture of sterile pharmaceutical products, making use of industrial-scale High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

HPLCis a separation process in which, typically, an impure compound is injected into a solvent stream (called the mobile phase) and forced through a column packed with a solid sorbent– resulting in the separation of the compound into its constituent parts. The operation calls for high pressure pumping combined with pulse-free flow.

Atraditional metering pump at first considered for the application was rejected in favour of the Hydra-Cell G03.

very little pulsation. On this system the customer did install pulsation dampeners, but of a size much smaller than would have been needed for a traditional metering pump of similar maximum flow rating to that of the G03.

There was a double advantage here: system cost saving and also the consideration that a big dampener could cause problems in the elution process.

Advantages of Hydra-Cell pump on this application
  • High pressure capability. Minimal pulsation.

Hydra-Cell® pumps corrosive pharmaceutical agent.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is an Israeli, multinational pharmaceutical giant and the World’s No.1 producer of generic pharmaceuticals. Every single minute of every day, approximately 2,500 Teva packs are dispensed in the EU.

At the Company’s Debrecen plant in Hungary, engineers were using a peristaltic pump with a neoprene tube to dose an acidic pharmaceutical agent but were seeking a better solution because of concerns over chemical resistance of the pump tube.

Having also tried EPDM peristaltic tubes, the customer considered a magnetic coupled plastic gear pump but Wanner's distributor, Verder Hungary, proposed a Hydra-Cell G13 with polypropylene liquid head and PTFE diaphragms.

This combination proved to have the best chemical resistance and the Hydra-Cell multi-diaphragm design provided a virtually pulse free flow. The Hydra-Cell’s ability to run dry without damage was also considered to be a good benefit.

Advantages of Hydra-Cell pump on this application

Hydra-Cell was chosen for this application for the following reasons:

  • Its known reliability, now proven to this customer when compared to other pump technologies.
  • With multiple diaphragms in a single pump head, Hydra-Cell offers a virtually pulse-less flow.

Application details

A Hydra-Cell G35 pump was supplied to an international OEM and subsequently incorporated into a nanofiltration rig for use by food additive specialists Danisco in the manufacture of Xylitol.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol widely used as a sweetener in foods and other products such as chewing gum. The liquid pumped in the Danisco process is a proprietary solvent containing solids. It is non-lubricating. On this food-related application the reservior of the G35 is filled with glycerine in place of oil. The pump is run at 600 rpm and discharge pressure is 35 bar.

Advantages of Hydra-Cell pump on this application
  • The Hydra-Cell pump was prefered to traditional metering pumps because of its lower cost, compact build with small footprint and its virtually pulse-free flow, protecting the filter membrane against damage.

Application details

A major pharmaceutical manufacturer in the Czech Republic was using stainless steel gear pumps to transfer a variety of organic solvents from reactor vessels to storage tanks. Solvent liquids are not easy to pump, being thin and non-lubricating. And on this application, though filtered, they carry a 1 to 5% volume of residual small solids (100– 200 microns).

In practice, the gear pumps were unable to perform with the expected reliability. Rapid wear reduced flow rate below requirement, downtime was excessive and spare parts expensive. The customer looked for a better solution.

AxFlow recommended the Hydra-Cell G25 pump, with PTFE diaphragms. Successful tests were run (with the pump operating at 500 rpm for optimum service life on this application). Several Hydra-Cell pumps are now in use at the plant, with results justifying confident expectation of sustained reliability and long life.

Advantages of Hydra-Cell pump on this application
  • Seal-less design, low wear, able to handle non-lubricating liquids. Abrasive resistant. ATEX certified

Application details

The end user customer manufactures pharmaceutical intermediates and supplies to various pharmaceutical companies in India and overseas.

Wanner Hydra-Cell pumps are installed at their RO plant to treat the industrial waste water from the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP). With this operation, high total dissolved solids (TDS) water is converted in to low TDS water which can be further used in process. ETP water has TDS of about 20-25 K. By using the RO process, High TDS water can be reduced to low TDS as 500-700 TDS.

In this application, ETP water fed into the RO membrane and resistance developed of 60 Bar and from one side low TDS water comes considered as permeate and other side is rejected as high TDS water. The low TDS water can then be used fro processing and the high TDS water is disposed.

Previously the customer installed triplex plunger CAT pumps, these pumps had frequent breakdowns with leakage and resulted in expensive repairs.

From the latest reports, The Hydra-Cell pumps have been running since problem-free since 2018 with minimal maintenance and without any need for spare parts.

Advantages of Hydra-Cell pump on this application
  • Seal-less design eliminates expensive seal maintenance and leakage issues.
